Daddy Is Your BFF and I'm Okay With That

What is it about Daddy that has you so enamored?

Is it his smile? Is it the way he makes you laugh, all the time, even when you don’t want to laugh? Is it his tight hugs and how you fit so snuggly into his hold? Could it be the way he looks you directly in the eye when you are talking to him?

Could it be, that all the reasons you are enamored with Daddy, are the same reasons that I am, dear daughter?

If you were to ask my almost six-year old who her “best friend” is, she would say “Daddy”. There would be no pause, no need for thought – she would just blurt out his name. Sure there are times where my feelings are hurt that it is not me. I mean, why isn’t Mommy your BFF? I tend to your needs all day long!

But, I get it.

You are drawn to Daddy for so many of the same reasons that I was when I first met him…and still am.

There is something special about the Daddy daughter relationship. The way that Dads seem so powerful and heroic to their daughters. The way a Dad can make his daughter feels so safe. The way a Dad can show you so many fun things to do. The way a dad can make your life, simply, better.

So, Daddy, please keep being our little girl’s BFF. You are at your best as her father. And I, will resign myself to the fact that, for now, I take a backseat to you in her eyes. And that is perfectly okay. Because one day, not to long from now, when she is asked who her best friend is…my heart will sing when she answers, without pause, and says “Mommy”.
