There Once Was a Girl

there once was a girl who knew she could

she could because she would

she would take every chance

dance every dance

this girl who knew she could

there once was a girl who knew she could

then anxiety took over her ‘hood

her ‘hood and her brain

her courage got stained

this girl who once knew she could

there once was a girl who knew she could

who remembered how she would

would work hard and try

with barely a cry

this girl who once would

there once was a girl who knew she could

because her momma told her she would

she could be anything

a queen or a king

this girl who most definitely would

there once was a boy who knew he would

because his momma told him he could

he could be happy and strong

and someone who gets along

this boy who was told that he could

there once was a young one who would

take risks just because she could

she had no fear

her siblings’ peer

this young one who knew that she would

there once was a girl who was a mother

this poem is about her and her kids — two sisters and a brother

they all know they can

thanks to a man

who is forever their biggest fan

there once was a family growing tighter

each one of them a fighter

they fight for each other

always loving one another

this family that is growing tighter

there is this girl who has a big heart

her strength is off the chart

she loves her fam

she’s a Mama Bear, damn

this girl who has a great heart

there once was a girl who knew she could

she could because she said she would

she never hid

she always did

this girl who always knew she could
